Majestic Realty on Monday unveiled new design details for its planned hotel at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, including more meeting space and guest rooms and “greater” connectivity to the airport’s domestic terminal than originally envisioned.
The real estate developer also revealed that the hotel flag will be a Hilton.
Construction of the 541-room hotel, the first to be built at Hartsfield-Jackson and attached to the airport, is expected to begin later this year and be completed in 2022.
It was originally slated to break ground in 2018 as an InterContinental hotel.
The Hilton is part of a larger $350 million development by Majestic Realty that will include 50,000 square feet of meeting space, an office building, a second “hospitality space,” and a 1,150-spot parking deck.
“In the lead-up to construction, we have improved nearly every facet of this project, starting with a hotel with an iconic, all-glass design that will make an architectural statement to millions of travelers each year,” Stan Conway, executive vice president at Majestic Realty, said in the release.
“The hotel also will provide guests with a seamless, intuitive and dramatic entry from wherever they’re arriving from across the globe.”
Designed by Portman Architects, the forthcoming Hilton will be constructed on what is now the West economy parking lot and will stand 14 stories tall.
“The new design pays homage to the magical experience of flight,” Pierluca Maffey, principal and vice president at Portman Architects, said in the release.
“The edges of the simple linear volume depart from the main mass as if pushed away by a gentle wind, and the roof of the public areas recall the form of a wing or the line of a plane taking off, all of this reflecting the unique quality of Hartsfield-Jackson and establishing a benchmark for other airport cities in the world.”
Wimberly Interiors is designing the hotel guest rooms while the lobby and restaurant space will be designed by New York-based Tihany Design.
“This will be one of one in the world in hospitality, lifting the customer experience by giving travelers a unique place to stay, eat and meet,” Conway said.
“No expense will be spared in building a hotel that is best in class and destined to become an Atlanta landmark.”

This looks less impressive than the original design. Moreover, it looks like a lot of cost were spared with it’s cut and paste glass box design. In my opinion, the new Westin at Denver’s airport is an iconic design and it too features an all glass exterior.
Boring and uninspiring… This was a squandered opportunity to add some real architectural flair to the World’s Busiest Airport… instead, per usual… Portman curses us with another one of its brutalist concrete box (with some glass thrown in) designs. A lot of airport hotels here are are designed with smaller recessed windows and other features to help mediate the noise being so close to the airport. How do you noise-mediate an all glass hotel right on the runway? Is it some special glass or something? That’s one reason airport hotels can be expensive to build, though this looks like a regular hotel that could be anywhere on the perimeter.
