Bistro 980 takes over Nona Mia Cafe space on the corner of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue.

UPDATE (January 22, 2012):[Rendering] New Italian restaurant opening adjacent to Midtown’s 5 Napkin Burger

Please God, don’t let it be a burger joint.

But then again, maybe that’s what the space needs to see success.

Let’s face it, the space at 980 Piedmont Avenue is Midtown’s restaurant cemetery. Here’s a recap of the casualties:

  1. Big Red Tomato Bistro. Dead.
  2. Balance Restaurant. Dead.
  3. Fishmonger Seafood. Dead.
  4. Sweet Devil Moon. Dead.
  5. Nona Mia Cafe. Dead.

Bistro 980, the latest concept to tempt fate at the location, filed a permit with City of Atlanta Tuesday for some demolition to the space. Laura Horton with Creative Loafing first discovered the permit.

At first glance of the word “demo,” we were overjoyed at the though of tent city coming down.

But after further investigation, the only demoing being done is to “interior partitions and awning of exterior” at a cost of $3,500.00, according to the permit. Lets hope the “awning” mentioned is the greenhouse looking patio.

Developing…

  1. i agree… demo that thing immediately. they have a great stone base they should keep though… i would like to see them do something like the nook and have a nice trellised open air outdoor seating space. i think that is more inviting than the current pos and might help business…

i would also nominate almost all the retail spaces at the base of Spire (along the 7th street side) as pretty cursed when it comes to being successful.

  2. I always liked Balance. I thought the concept was pretty cool for back in the early 2000s… Maybe it was the cocktails that I always had at the bar before I was seated…. Sean and Gilbert always have hired bartenders with a heavy pour…..

  3. i loved the breadsticks at Big Red Tomato. i agree that the patio should be more open like joe’s on juniper with trees and lights. by the way i ate at Five Napkins this week. nice interior but pricey.

  4. I loved Big Red Tomato… not much since then. Not sure about tearing down the patio tent, I’m not a fan of the open patio on a busy street… Oh, I know, everyone wants to be “seen”, but why do people want to inhale exhaust fumes while eating dinner?

  5. The open patio seems to be popular at 5 Napkin, I’m sure it would be here also.
Personally, I’d like to see another gay bar go in here. A little healthy competition for Blake’s ;).

  6. Good luck putting in another gay bar. We’ve gotten midtown so nice that soon the places that haven’t been overrun with buckhead fratastics and soroistitutes will be.

  7. They need a concept that doesn’t require a driving demographic. A bistro with outdoor patio seating and a healthy menu is the only thing that will work.
