Condos at 905 Juniper claim another restaurant death

UPDATE (August 26, 2011): Chocolate Pink to reopen as Midtown Life Chiropractic

Chocolate Pink Cafe closed yesterday, Dec. 12.

Tweets went out today from Owner Michael Goodrich, that the pastry shop located at 905 Juniper Street NE closed after five and a half years in business.

“After five and a half years of providing the best pastries, cakes and chocolates in Atlanta, Chocolate Pink has decided to close its doors as of December 12, 2010.”

The pastry shop was located at 905 Juniper Condos which has restaurant and mercantile space that has yet to see a successful concept.

Lupe and Beleza, located just a few doors down from Chocolate Pink, met the same fate earlier this year.

“Our decision to move on to other ventures has been difficult, but we feel the time is right.”

When will the death of small businesses in Atlanta subside?

  1. I live one block away from 905, and walk or drive past it a many times per week.

I can understand how Chocolate Pink went under in this economy– pricey luxuries are one of the first things to go, and this place was certainly pricey.

I still can’t figure out what happened with Lupe. That place always seemed busy to me. I don’t claim to be a restaurant industry wiz, but if Lupe couldn’t survive there– with, what appeared to be, a steady stream of business– I’m not sure what would survive there.

  2. This is terrible news. Chocolate Pink made the best cupcakes I’ve ever had (most others go overboard with the icing). I wish there was some heads up so I could have gotten one last box of cupcakes… 🙁

  3. Chocolate Pink was great — I enjoyed my experiences there and I’m sad to see it go. I think Kevin is right in that the recession cut down people’s luxury spending.

I don’t know for sure what has made this building so difficult for restaurants. Maybe these just haven’t been the right kind of businesses to attract a dedicated following of locals. I wonder if these spots have been too much driving-destination kinda places rather than casual ones that might make nearby locals feel at home in a ‘third space’ kinda way.

  4. I am not too surprised that Chocolate Pink closed. They’ve pushed scoutmob deals and coupons galore lately. Also, their cupcake were some of the worst I have had in the city. Not to speak ill of the dead (bakery), but there are tastier cupcakes at Sweet Pockets (Vinings), Lenox Cupakes (Phipps), Piece of Cake (Buckhead), Star Provisions (West Midtown), etc. Try them out if you are looking for a sugar fix.

  5. Yes; I heard the cupcakes were dry and otherwise awful, so I never tried one. I also heard the place was pricey. It’s dead in that location; nothing around. Dead after 7 or 8p.

  6. Sad. CP opened about a year before I moved away and I was really surprised that they were still open when I came back three years later. A luxury bakery seemed like a bankruptcy waiting to happen, but I thought they must have hit upon some brilliant strategy to have made it work for so long.

Boy, that building eats restaurants alive. Darin is right, anything that’s going to survive there has to be appealing enough, novel enough and cheap enough that people in the neighborhood will get in the habit of going there, taking their friends there and telling people about it. It has to be a place that people just go to when they want a late breakfast on the weekend or don’t feel like cooking after work or want to get out of the house, but not go too far.

I use to live in Peachtree Hills, right at the corner of Peachtree Hills Ave. and Virginia Ave. I have no idea what The Treehouse is doing (I went in there all of twice in five years) but that place was steadily busy Sunday through Wednesday and completely off the hook Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Not that many people even know it’s there, but the people who go REALLY go. I’m sure it’s taken them years to develop whatever the formula is, but now that they have it down they need start boxing it up and selling it to other small business owners around here.
