Brooklyn Bagel Adding Ansley Mall Bakery and Deli

Can the Johns Creek restaurant fill the void left behind by The Royal Bagel decades ago?

Brooklyn Bagel Bakery & Deli, a longtime NYC-style Johns Creek bagel joint, is expanding ITP. The restaurant is opening an outpost in Ansley Mall, at 1544 Piedmont Ave NE, according to a Facebook announcement earlier this week from Brooklyn Bagel. “It’s official! We are opening a second location in Ansley Mall shopping center!”

Ansley Mall from 1974 until 1997 was home to The Royal Bagel. Its departure from the city left a “lasting impact,” as penned by the Atlanta Jewish Times. “For over 20 years, The Royal Bagel was an Atlanta institution,” the Times wrote of the longstanding restaurant. “When it opened in 1974, most locals didn’t know what a bagel was. When the doors closed for the final time in 1997, the bagel shop founded by Michael, Kenny, and Rose Yoss had been voted ‘Best of Atlanta’ thirteen years running. So why did it close? Former co-owner Michael Yoss says, ‘It just got stale.'”

Coincidentally, Brooklyn Bagel first opened its doors in 1997, the same year The Royal Bagel bid Atlanta farewell, according to the restaurant’s website. “Opening in 1997, Brooklyn Bagel has been a part of the community for 21 years,” the website states. “We are a fast-casual New York deli and bakery and make all of our bagels from scratch, daily, using the traditional kettle boiling method. This ensures that our bagels are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside…”

It’s unclear which space Brooklyn Bagel will occupy or when it will open. Ownership on Friday did not immediately respond to What Now Atlanta’s request for comment.

Over in nearby Toco Hills, Bagel Palace, another beloved New York-style bagel shop that closed its doors in 2018, was eying a comeback, but in Decatur. Owner Manny Klein earlier this year filed a permit to buildout Bagel Palace in the Shamrock Plaza shopping center, but never actually secured a lease, according to Atlanta Magazine.

  1. I remeber The Royal Bagel fomdly. Wish it would come back!

Add it to the list of much beloved closed eateries – The Magic Pan, Pippin’s Pizza and Hamburger Hamlet.

  2. With a great deal of excitement, I am waiting for Brooklyn Bagel to open. Alan and I have spoken numerous times about him going to Ansley Mall and asking for my thoughts. I told him that if The Royal Bagel were to open again, it would be back in Ansley. I wish him all the warmth and sense of community we were afforded and the success that we had so many years ago.
