Hop City’s Boxcar is set to open its doors for the first time on Friday, March 1, 2019, according to a press release Monday.
The restaurant, at 1020 White St. SW, joins Monday Night Brewing, Wild Heaven Beer, Honeysuckle Gelato and more in the West End’s Lee + White development.
“Drawing inspiration from its namesake, the team has designed Boxcar to reflect the gritty, industrial aesthetic of a graffiti’d freight train,” according to the press release.
“The highlight of the decor is an original mural of Ray Leon Livingston, a famous hobo and author who traveled the country during the early twentieth century, commissioned by Atlanta’s Catlanta.”
Florida-native Executive Chef Matt Hutchins is behind the menu which includes highlights like the “Lobstah Roll,” Yuzu Fried Chicken and Roasted Beet Carpaccio, as well as “elevated” bar classics like the Soft Baked Pretzel and the Boxcar Beef Burger.
Boxcar will feature a selection of 80 rotating draft beers, wine, and creative cocktails at two in-house bars.
Along with the new restaurant space, Boxcar will include Hop City’s traditional retail space where customers can choose from an expansive selection of craft beers and small-production wines.
“Our retail space will be a little more curated on the beer side with closer to 1,000 choices compared to the 1,900 or so at our original Westside store,” Owner Kraig Torres said in the release.
“It will still be the best our local, national and worldwide brewers have to offer with a focus on freshness. You’ll also see a generous selection of small-production wines hand-picked by our equally-passionate wine team. We hope we have created a warm, friendly environment for enthusiasts of all things food and drink.”
Hop City will be donating a portion of sales at Boxcar to the Atlanta Mission and will be partnering with WorkSource Georgia to “help keep longtime West End residents in the community and working.”
It will be open Sunday from 11 am to 10 pm, Wednesday and Thursday from 5 pm to 10 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 12 am.
Hop City’s retail area will be open Monday through Thursday from 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 12 am and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 10 pm.

That’s really nice but coming from somebody who lives in the area what the area needs is a fordable food options that aren’t fast food. I did 90% of the people who live in the area can’t afford to even go once a month to a place like this.

I live in the area also. As you know the area is rapidly changing in demographics and income, with homes now selling for $200-$500. The newer residents can afford this. The area has affordable options already with fast food.. There even, “My Potato Factory,” in Westview which is less than $10 take out. Mango’s is opening up on RDA that will be affordable as is the Chinese spot next to that. These prices aren’t astronomical, they are mid-range. Also, “Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria,” will be opening their Pizza Spot on Metropolitan this Summer and that should be affordable. I’m hoping we see MORE places like this open, sooner than later in the $9-$20 range.
Gentrification is alive and well in Atlanta. The residents of this area don’t need one of these high end restaurants here. They need affordable businesses that can thrive from their neighborhood citizens. Let the pricing out of long time residents continue unabated and this place will become like New York and Boston have become; uninteresting non-diverse cities.
