The opening of Barrio ATL represents the “culmination of a dream,” says owner Karol Russell, an entertainment lawyer by training.

“I grew up in the restaurant business,” Russell tells What Now Atlanta. “My family owned Russell’s Elmwood Restaurant, just outside New Orleans. I loved working there. I loved that feeling, that neighborhood vibe. I want to recreate that – like the song from Cheers, ‘where everyone knows your name.’”

According to Russell, the team is still finalizing a menu, “but the core items will be birria tacos and ramen,” or “Mexican fusion with soul.” Similarly, they are currently working on a liquor license.

Why did Russell choose this neighborhood for Barrio ATL? “When I first moved to Atlanta, one of the first areas that really stood out as historic black community was Cascade Heights. I wanted to be part of the revitalization of the area.”

Barrio ATL will be joining area businesses such as Oreatha’s at The PointAiskrimu Ice CreamMoreLyfe Juice, and Serenidad.
