Juan Sebastian Calle and Adam Berlin, the team behind Buena Vida Tapas & Sol on the Atlanta BeltLine, will open a new concept called Chicheria MX Kitchen. It’s set to open in mid-2023 at the 80-acre adaptive reuse development on Atlanta’s Upper Westside, according to an announcement.

Berlin, in a phone interview Thursday, said the new restaurant will sit near the Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q at The Works. It will take about 4,000 square feet at the project.

“We love what developer Selig has done with bringing a really nice mix of [tenants],” Berlin said. “We know that the Westside is going to keep growing … It’s going to be huge in the future.”

Calle and Berlin have enlisted “Top Chef” alum Whitney Otawka to consult on the concept’s menu. A highlight of the menu is handmade, organic blue corn tortillas.

“We’re really excited to be working with Chef Whitney Otawka,” Berlin said. “When she was in Athens at her restaurant Cinco y Diez, she did some amazing stuff with modern Oaxacan, and she’s also from San Diego … She’s traveled all around Mexico researching.”

Calle in a press release said the concept will be unlike any other Mexican restaurant, “with health conscious and satisfying, authentic dishes such as our handmade blue corn tortillas and the best Baja fish taco in the city.”

The restaurant’s main dining room and bar will mimic the tones and textures traditionally found in the Mexican peninsula, according to announcement. The restaurant will feature an expansive covered patio overlooking The Spur and a to-go window with an abbreviated food and beverage menu.

Patrons will also be able to watch the blue corn tortillas being made.

Chicheria joins more than 25 tenants in the first phase of The Works, which spans 27 acres. That includes the food hall Chattahoochee Food Works and brewery Dr. Scofflaw’s, among others.

Other upcoming openings include Your 3rd Spot, Fetch Dog Park, BRASH Coffee Roasters, and a new concept from Dave Green of The Select.
