Another “Closed For Renovations” Case Resulting In Closure

Sweet Auburn Bistro, a restaurant that served American food with southern and Caribbean flair, has closed at 171 Auburn avenue in downtown.

Located on the Auburn Avenue side of Renaissance Walk, Sweet Auburn Bistro originally opened in March 2009.

In early May of this year, a sign was posted on the main entrance with a re-opening date as the restaurant went into “renovations”:

“Sweet Auburn Bistro will be closed for renovations beginning Monday May 24th We will Re-Open June 2nd at 11am.”

Sweet Auburn never reopened.

Now, just a few weeks later, every glass window on the space has a huge sign announcing the opening of a new restaurant, Auburn Jake’s.

Specializing in seafood and steaks, Auburn Jake’s is slated to open July 2010.

  1. Shared with me by a longtime bar/restaurant manager. Three warning signs for employees that the place is going under:

    1. You always seem to be “out” of certain menu items

    2. Your longtime vendors now want cash at the time of delivery

    3. You miss payroll (“I’m sure it is a clerical error at the bank…should be resolved by Monday…”)

  2. Hey,

FYI-Chef Glen (former owner of Sweet Auburn Bistro) is also apart of Auburn
Jake’s!!! So, those of you who is still owed money, you can find him
    cooking at Auburn Jake’s…coming soon!!!

  3. I’m from central FLA..I went up to ATL for the weekend..Had found Auburn Bistro on the internet and tried it out..a bit intimidating at first, with respect to the location..but once seated, we had an absolutely delightful experience..the food was superb, the service was excellent, the atmosphere was perfect..loved the jazz music!!

REALLY sorry to see the place go down..I was looking forward to my next visit up to ATL, and to the Auburn Bistro..bummer….

  4. I went to sweet auburn for the first time a few months ago w/my bf and had a great time… I was looking foward to going back soon… Im disappointed to hear it has been shut down. The food and atmosphere were great.

  5. LOL I was a former employee of Sweet Auburn and was not informed that the restaurant was closed until after the doors were locked and the white paper went up. They lied and told us they were rennovating. Yeah right! And I still didn’t get paid….
Sad to say but I will never work for another black owned business and Im black!

Good Luck Auburn Jakes or whatever! Because if Chef Glen is involved it won’t last either!

  6. Forced out the lease my behind. Rah was and always has been a crook. He was a former part of another place and was forced out. He is a scam artist.

  7. is it when a black business closes some black folks will say I will never work for another black business again but when white businesses closed and many of them do we never say that. Reverse racism at its worse we are so brainwashed. I hate this business closed. It reinforces stereotypes for black folks so glad I was raised differently we always had black doctorsand lawyers growing up as well as black dentistand my family patronized black hAirdressers and BarBersas well as banks insurance companies X cetera
