[Photos] ‘ATLNext’ South Terminal Canopy Hits Topping Out at Atlanta Airport

After breaking ground in September 2016, the last structural steel has been put in place on South Canopy.

New South Construction, McCarthy Building Companies, and Synergy Development Partners’ joint venture known as NSMS, along with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, recently installed the final structural steel on the south terminal canopy as part of the ATLNext project.

The north-side canopy was completed in October 2018.

April 2020 is the target completion date for the canopy portion of the overall $6 bn ATLNext project.

Consisting of 3,500 tons of steel covered in 19,776 square yards of lightweight, ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, the canopies create a “new iconic gateway” for the City of Atlanta.

With an average of 275,000 people traveling through the Atlanta airport every day, the canopies improve the passenger experience by protecting visitors from the elements and improving traffic flow with the planned addition of elevated walkways.

In addition to the canopies, the Atlanta airport is modernizing the Central Passenger Terminal Complex.

NSMS is making upgrades to all 12 entrances and associated facades, lobbies and curbside check-ins, bringing the nearly 40-year-old terminal into the 21st century.

This project is one of the first components of the ATLNext development program.

The goal of the project is to bring convenience and connectivity to passengers as well as attract and grow business interest for the Atlanta airport.

  1. I don’t understand how we still don’t have dropoff and pickup traffic logically set up at ATL. It is always a zoo.

  2. More unnecessary and absurdly expensive construction at the airport, for the sole purpose of buying political favor.

  3. I love the canopies. They not only protect passengers from sun and rain but they also include a fantastic graphic element.

  4. They should have designed the upper level for departures and the lower level for arrivals. I don’t see why arrivals and departures share the same space. American has its own exclusive baggage claim area at the lower level of the north terminal, but that space can be used more often by carriers like Southwest, Spirit, and Frontier.
