One of Atlanta’s most iconic dance clubs, MJQ, announced that its reopening at the new venue had been postponed. The club that is all set to open its new location announced the postponement due to the recent cold weather in Atlanta. Celebrating its relocation and reopening, the club will host a Grand opening party at the new spot at Underground Atlanta on January 29.

The city of Atlanta and the surrounding metropolitan area in the state of Georgia are under an Extreme Cold Warning this week. As people brace for the inclement weather, many businesses have announced closings, and events have been postponed. Atlanta is expecting snow showers and very cold temperatures on these days. The city has been experiencing temperatures in the 30s and mid-20s, which needless to say means the days and nights are cold.

Atlantans are no strangers to the amazing vibes at MJQ. The hometown favorite club has been open at Ponce De Leon for more than 25 years. This is the third move for the club as it first started under the Ponce de Leon Hotel and then moved under a parking lot at 736 Ponce.

Now that the club is moving to a new location, it is expected to continue to host great fun nights at the new spot as well. The reopening party will have low-priced drink fees and free entry.

Speaking about the club’s legacy, one of the owners said that there have been people coming in who say their parents have danced in the same club. The new generation getting their own version of MJQ is special, he added.

MJQ will be taking over the space that was previously that of the iconic restaurant and bar Dante’s Down the Hatch space. The space was decorated like an 18th-century pirate ship with retro furnishings paired with quirky, nostalgic decor. Now it has been completely revamped while also saving a piece of Atlanta’s history.

MJQ has paid homage to the legendary quirky design of Dante’s as it has reimagined the space for the newer times. Featuring a two-level main dance floor, a mezzanine, and multiple rooms offering different music experiences, the new MJQ space is full of awesomeness.

The space revamping has been done with the help of Local artists. They have made contributions to the mural that portrays MJQ’s journey while acknowledging Dante’s past. The famous “moat” at the old Dante’s has also been transformed. It has been made to look like a spaceship sitting in the clouds instead of a sea ship sitting in the water.

As a first, an elevated cocktail menu alongside its classic offerings will be served at MJQ’s new location. It will cater to locals and tourists visiting the prime spot in downtown Atlanta. The new MJQ will also be very close to attractions like the Masquerade and a burlesque cabaret. This will make Underground Atlanta an even more vibrant area for nightlife in Atlanta.

The club has been in the same parking lot for 26 years and the move allows it a chance to expand on everything people love about MJQ, one of the co-owners said.

The dance club announced a whole range of events throughout this surprise last week at the Ponce. As the city deals with the cold storms, MJQ will be open to having fun during the chaos.

It will have Locals Only, the longest-running Wednesday night dance party in Atlanta on January 22. The MJQ JAMS dance party on January 23 will be presented by DANCEeav. On January 24, the club at Ponce will host “Motion” which will have non-stop HipHop Club Anthems and Classics. On the last day at Ponce, on January 25, there will be Fun Dip, with fun music for fun people.

The club also hosted a VIP Soft Launch of MJQ last weekend. BeltlineCosplay had brought an intergalactic group of ATLiens to add a spark to the opening.

Ryan Purcell and Ryan Murphy co-own the MJQ Concourse. The space has been famous in Atlanta for its welcoming vibe, diverse music selection, and unpretentious charm. While the new location is changing, the owners have vowed that the essence of MJQ will remain the same.
