The national discount department store has submitted its intent to lease land at the Suburban Plaza shopping center in Decatur, according to Glen Wilkins, senior manager of public affairs and government relations for Walmart.

Atlanta-based Selig Enterprises, plans to redevelop the Decatur shopping center bounded by North Decatur Road, Scott Boulevard and Church Street.

At this time, “there is no lease in place” with Selig, Wilkins told What Now Atlanta in a telephone interview Wednesday.

If Selig moves forward with Walmart’s offer, the new retail location could add as many as 300 new jobs, he said.

“In the economy we’re in, this is a great opportunity, not just for the jobs it will bring but because of the money people will save shopping at Walmart,” Wilkins said.

When rumors broke of Walmart’s intent to open a Decatur location, residents were disgruntled at the news. Walmart has been listening to community feedback, according to Wilkins.

“The community wants the new store to have an intown feel,” Wilkins said. “That’s what we’re doing.”

Walmart will add new sidewalks and landscaping to make its Suburban plaza location more pedestrian friendly, he said. The Suburban Plaza Walmart Supercenter would be built similarly to the Chamblee Walmart Supercenter, with 90 percent of the retailer’s parking  located below the store.

Walmart could open at Suburban Plaza in 2014.

  1. No matter what they make the place look like on the outside if they don’t hire the right people this place will be like all other Wal-Marts, something to avoid unless its absolutely necessary to go there.
