“Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, Waffold had to close,” according to a sign posted to the restaurant’s window.

Waffold’s closure could possibly be the result of its trademark troubles, namely the use of “gourmet waffle sandwiches,” a phrase owned by California-based Bruxie, a concept sharing several similarities.

A Waffold spokesperson told What Now Atlanta that the sandwich shop had since removed the word “gourmet” from its tagline.

Waffold was not immediately available for comment.

  1. A series of unfortunate circumstances, including coming up with the concept that people want to eat sandwiches wrapped up in waffles.

  2. it is very unfortunate for the owners but if you are going to be in VH or any atlanta neighborhood, you might want to spend time getting to know your market first. this was doomed to fail over here.

  3. You can apparently get financing to open a crappy and misguided concept, but not to perform a Google search. Amateurs. Again.

  4. @belstein @Steve They knew exactly what Bruxie was. They didn’t ‘accidentally’ use the same concept. The entire menu was a 1 for 1 copy of the Bruxie menu. Every item. It was blatant.

  5. I’ve definitely seen pancake sandwiches — pancakes you fill with meet and cheese and roll up — overseas, specifically in Germany, but not sure how that could work with waffles, which aren’t really bendy. And just put stuff between two waffles? Sounds like an endeavor.

Meanwhile I pass through Morningside every morning on the 16 bus and watch with interest as certain spots stay occupied year after year by the same businesses, while others change over every week.
