Atlanta based Fifth Group announces plans for new restaurant

UPDATE (April 11): Vickery’s to reopen as seafood joint

Vickery’s Bar & Grill will reopen as Fifth Group’s seventh restaurant concept, according to company spokesman Michael Erickson.

Vickery’s closed on Jan. 1 (story here).

Erickson informally announced the company’s plans for the space at 1106 Crescent Avenue in a Tweet Monday.

“It’s official! We’ll be opening a new concept in the old Vickery’s space on Crescent Avenue in early 2012…,” Erickson said. “More details soon.”

What Now Atlanta learned Monday that Fifth Group has no firm ideas for the space after reaching out to Erickson through Twitter for comment and project specifics.

“We are toying with a couple of concepts but nothing’s nailed down,” Erickson said in a Twitter message.

Fifth Group is also slated to open a Tex-Mex restaurant in former II Mulino Downtown (story here).

  1. I think they should put an El Taco in that space… then they would have El Taco and The Original El Taco.

  2. Yeah, another $hitty taco joint. No thanks.

This is great news though…Fifth Group is Atlanta’s best restaurant group, hands down, so I’m hopeful that they’ll continue the trend here. A chic tapas joint, with great cocktails, and a kind of sound table vibe (part restaurant, part lounge, etc.) would be great here…

  3. This is good news, whatever it ends up being. Something like Sound Table would be cool as I could actually walk to it from my apartment. Now if we could just get something to replace Noon… and fill the rest of the vacant space on Peachtree… sigh.

  4. There needs to be more high rise apartments since new condos are a tough sell right now. I know my apartment complex is pretty much full and rent has increased. Apartments are doing well right now.

I believe Novare is looking at building 2 or 3 highrise apartments in Midtown and Downtown in the near future. That would help.

  5. Also chic tapas and cocktails? You might wish midtown was that, but it’s not. Look at the places that are out the door…RiRa, Front Page News, Deadwood, Steamhouse, Tin Lizzy’s…we, and I say we as in the neighborhood, want places where we can sit down with our friends with a pitcher of beer, some live music and actually talk and socialize with each other. Not some stuffy lounge with a dress code where we can’t hear ourselves think let alone speak over the crappy house music.

  6. @JT. You are not hip and probably part of the reason why there are so many empty retail spaces in and around the neighborhood.

House music + less think = more tax revenue. Vote stuffy.

  7. A Sound Table concept would never work in midtown, which has now morphed into what the Buckhead bar district once was. The crowd that flocks to Edgewood is not going to go to Crescent Avenue.

  8. Yes, I’m aware of what all the places nearby Vickery’s are like – which is precisely why it would be nice if we had something different in the neighborhood. Honestly, how much crap food and cheap beer can one city consume?

Chic tapas and cocktails doesn’t have mean dress code, it doesn’t mean loud house music, and it doesn’t mean stuffy. It is possible to go somewhere and get food/drink that has a sense of ingenuity, creativity, and innovation to it, in an environment that is intimate and inviting. Ecco, another Fifth Group restaurant, is a perfect example of this.

I’m aware JT, that anything that might require you to wear something with sleeves on it, is a problem for you. However, I think that there are a lot of people in this neighborhood who have a sliver of taste, and would love to see something atypical to the Crescent bar, in Vickery’s old space. Ecco is constantly busy, which I think is a testament to the neighborhood’s desire for this.

Why is there so much backlash when someone says they’d like to see something different in this city? it’s pathetic.

@Mike, I really don’t think more high rise buildings are the answer either. I love the idea of more rental residential, but I think it needs to be in the form of aesthetically different (every damn high rise built in the last 5 years looks the same) buildings, from different developers, and needs to be more temperate in it’s initial approach. Tossing up 25 stories of rentals will skew the supply, and be difficult to fill. A handful of smaller 5-7 story buildings (with future air right development potential) with ground floor retail use, and small areas of publicly accessible green space, in place of parking lots and vacant areas, in the more heavily trafficked areas of Midtown/Downtown is where you start, and then as you bring people into the city, the demand for housing will snowball and necessitate bigger buildings.

  9. My vote is for tacos or burgers, cause if there is one (or two) things Atlanta is missing it’s tacos and burgers. Sad, Vickery’s had a decent burger too.

  10. Last time my girlfriend and I went to Vickery’s Midtown, it was not very good so I’m not surprised it closed. My burger was decent (nothing special) but her chicken sandwich was terrible and very chewy. We didn’t bother to go back so nothing to be sad at.

I kind of hope it is tacos or burgers (maybe both?) only to tick off annoying people like you.
