The Icing On The Cake For Atlanta Closings

It was just this past Monday that Matty Cakes Bakery owner, Chef Matt Lewis, was supposed to be a baker’s man, baking a cake as fast as he can at the “Great Desserts” class at Cook’s Warehouse.

Unfortunately, the class was canceled as Lewis was forced to close his bakery located on the corner of Piedmont Avenue and Rock Springs Road in Midtown.

Matty Cakes operated as a breakfast pastries, sandwiches, coffee drinks and, of course, cake shop. A huge “for lease sign” at the space and a call to Cooks Warehouse confirms the closure. Lewis was not reachable though Becky at Cooks Warehouse says he will still be taking personal orders running shop from home.

Atlanta based Publicist with Red Clay PR (clients include major Atlanta yogurt favorite, Yogli Mogli), Jamie Annarino, tipped us off two weeks ago, suspicious that Matty Cakes had closed– a legitimate sign of failure was the empty parking lot and shop.

Closure aside, it’s evident that Lewis is a worthy chef considering some of his recent credentials: judge on Food Networks “Throwdown With Bobby Flay” and “Chef vs. City.”

  1. “Taking The Bitter With Sweet As Matty Cakes Crumbles” It’s really sad that you’re adding insult to injury! In these tough times, it’s very hard for small businesses to even keep the doors open…

  2. I don’t know. The one time I went in there, looking to order a special birthday cake, the staff were indifferent/borderline rude, even though there was only one other customer. I didn’t order.

  3. Matty Cakes rocked! Their cookies and cupcakes were the best in town.

I am very, very sad. The customer service I received was always great.

Sad, sad, sad. Hope they make it back.

  4. Matty Cakes was the best. We are so sad to see them go. They had the most generous sized & YUMMY cupcakes. Our favorite after school stop. I loved how you could watch the work going on.

  5. So sad…where will I go for my son’s birthday cakes??? Matt is a ridiculously talented artist. I’m sure he’ll be back! Matty Cakes…RIP.

  6. I bought a cake there once a few years ago. The women working the counter was handling money and food without washing her hands. I never went back. Cleanliness matters restaurant owners.

  7. Wow, aren’t you Mr. Misinformation ! How did you leap to Matty Cakes is closed? I believe the website states that they are in transition. True, this is vague, but they are still taking orders. How did you get this information that Matt is working out of his kitchen? Did you make that up as well? I know,I know, you take great pride in reporting when another Atlanta business closes. Did you ever think that something else might be going on? Perhaps there was a dispute with the landlord. Perhaps that location just was not working for them, and they had not found another before their lease was up. You really ought to put the smug, deathmarch crap on the shelf and just provide the facts. Thanks for all the hard work on this excellent report. Can’t wait for the update…
