Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream to open second location down the street at
Edgewood Shopping District

Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream is expanding to Edgewood and possibly the Westside.

The ice cream parlor will open at 1220 Caroline Street in the former Cold Stone Creamery at the Edgewood Shopping District the first week of May, according to Donald Sargent, owner of Morelli’s. Cold Stone Creamery closed late last year which doesn’t surprise Sargent in the least.

“Franchised ice cream shops can’t make it because they have too much overhead,” Sargent said. “It’s no wonder Cold Stone Creamery closes 300 stores a year.”

Davis Dudley, Kirkwood resident and employee at the neighboring FIGO Pasta, told What Now Atlanta on a trip to the restaurant Sunday, he is “indifferent” about Morelli’s opening next door.

“I would rather it be a bar,” Dudley said.

Edgewood residents Matt Segall and Michelle Cohen, who were engaged in front of Morelli’s, couldn’t disagree more.

Cohen’s favorite celebrity chef, Kevin Gillespie who teamed up with Morelli’s recently to create custom flavors, was in on the couple’s engagement.

“I hope it doesn’t open by Target,” Cohen said. “It won’t be as cute.”

Morelli’s also has plans for a Westside location, according to Sargent, who hopes to further his relationship with Gillespie.

“We might do something with Kevin Gillespie if he opens his second barbecue restaurant on the Westside,” Sargent said.

This was news Cohen drooled over.

“That would be so awesome! Barbecue from my favorite chef and ice cream from Morelli’s,” Cohen said. “I want Morelli’s all around me.”

Cohen’s favorite flavor is Carrot Cake, something Gillespie created the day of her engagement.

“I love it!”

  1. Very excited about the Westside news there. We could use some good ice cream over here.

Caleb, what *is* the status of Kevin’s BBQ place on the Westside? I’d heard rumors that he was pretty close to securing a place already.

  2. We have no ice cream places on the westside. Bring it on! And the real sh*t, not another f*cking frozen yogurt joint.
