Burying Themselves Alive in The Graveyard of Dead Restaurant Concepts?

Rose and Crown Tavern, an English pup and sports bar, is opening on Powers Ferry road in Marietta mid-June just in time for the World Cup.

Taking space that was most recently La Madeline, a country French café, Owner Miguel Ayoub is excited about renovating the 4700 square feet of dinning space and 700 square foot patio.

“This area is missing a neighborhood bar,” Ayoub said, as he showed us the newly built bar and refinished fireplace.

Rose and Crown Tavern will serve fare to include shepherds pie, bangers and mash, as well as fish and chips. The “typical wings and burgers” will also be served but “it’s not going to be like Taco Mac or Wild Wings,” Ayoub added. “Our food is going to have a flare to it.”

With 15 TV’s, 13 inside and two on the covered outdoor patio, Rose and Crown Tavern will cater to all of the major sporting events to include UFC fights, boxing, and soccer.

The bar will feature 16 draft beers: Guinness, Sweetwater, Stella, Bud light, Miller light, etc. There will also be specialty martinis.

Alas, what’s the downside for new business owner Miguel Ayoub? Rose and Crown Tavern is opening on what we’re referring to as “restaurant death row.”

Rose and Crown Tavern is opening next door to the shuttered Famous Dave’s and next to that, the closed TGIF’s. We’re not mathematicians but simple arithmetic puts that at three-restaurant closures side-by-side if you include La Madeline.

“People have the idea that these restaurants shut down because business wasn’t good. It’s actually because the landlords wanted to renegotiate terms with tenants who didn’t want to pay more rent during a tough economy,” Ayoub said in explaining why his restaurant concept won’t meet the same fate as the neighboring eateries.

“As a family run business, I can do certain things that they couldn’t and I can save money where they weren’t able to. That will make us survive and be successful.”

Coming from 15 years experience in the Atlanta club business, we wish Ayoub and his Rose and Crown Tavern the best and we pray for their parole on restaurant death row.

  1. Death Row??? Um, Houston’s is two doors down and does over 7 million a year…Doesn’t sound like death row to me. If you didn’t notice the Wachovia next to the restaurants also closed, property owner had plans to demo the entire block and build a strip mall but when the economy went south the project was put on hold (I got this information from a much reliable source). Everyone around can’t wait for this place to open, places around here are packed for lunch and happy hour…need a neighborhood bar desperately. So, I liked your catchy title, but am happy to say, the word on the street is looking good for these guys!

  2. The Shroom is also standing strong in this area ….we are looking forward to a great nieghbor to draw more attention to this area……

  3. We’re very excited about the R&C opening. I popped in to see the place last night and it looks great. This is really the twist that was needed with Houston’s, Sal Grosso, and Mellow nearby to give a little variety. With such a large number of businesses nearby I hope it is a success.

I’m particularly looking forward to sitting outside on a fall Sunday afternoon with fish & chips and the football on the outdoor screens.

  4. If the thing about demolishing the block to build a strip mall is true, thank God the economy changed those plans. The last thing we need anywhere in this city is another half-empty, parking-lot dominated strip mall. With the Horizon at Wildwood condo and some other apartments and condos around, that area isn’t TOO far off from being walkable and semi-urban. The TGI Fridays, bank, and Famous Daves should be renovated or replaced with development that hugs the street, is friendly to pedestrians and bikers, and hides parking.

  5. My wife & I went to Rose & Crown on Monday, July 12th at 9pm and things were going strong! The first person to greet us, the owner, Miguel. He shared his story with us, introduced his wife and we immediately felt like we now have a “hometown pub” to take a break from life. We live just north of “Death Row” and we’re very excited to see R&C open up. The food that we saw coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled wonderful. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

  6. The Rose & Crown was my home away from home. Miguel and his staff made me feel welcome. My glass was never empty, the prices don’t compare to the 5star meals and service you receive. There is a pool table and darts for the quick stop in after work. Outside seating for the smokers. The Rose & Crown is for families or the out of towner that misses their own families. They will be here for many years to come.

  7. Phenominal atmosphere, fantastic & caring owners. Honestly some of the best restaurant food, not pub food, in town. I highly recommend and will continue to support the R & C !!!

  8. Awww come on Jonathan… I was looking forward to another dry cleaners, nail salon and cellular phone retailer! 😉

  9. Visited today – after driving by many times. The parking lot is always packed.
VERY friendly service , delicious food and cozy atmosphere.
I plan to return MANY MANY times.

  10. I used to work right across the street and stopped on the way to work for quiche and coffee before it was Rose and Crown. Stopped in for lunch today. Excellent value and great attitude by the staff. This will work. It was needed!

  11. As a nearby homeowner, I’m thrilled to have them opening here. My husband and I frequent Houston’s and Mellow quite frequently. We will gladly visit R & C to help support the local economy. We love the area and more dining options is just what it needs to be close to perfect!
