Bookstore owner files bankruptcy, scraps plans to relocate.

The corner of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue in Midtown is going to have a very different vibe than its had for the past 15 years come Friday morning.

That’s because the corner’s iconic Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse has permanently closed, the bookstore announced in a letter Thursday.

“Since we shared our financial struggles with you nine months ago, we have been very encouraged by the strong show of support. We have listed to your insights and your desire for us to stay in business,” Philip Rafshoon, owner of Outwrite said in the letter. “Unfortunately, we have run out of time and money to make that transformation.”

Outwrite, which was in business for 18 years, spent 15 of those years in its prime Midtown location, at 991 Piedmont Avenue.

Rafshoon first announced Outwrite would most likely close in an email to patrons this past November. In that same email he said the bookstore would relocate and open for business elsewhere.

Outwrite will not relocate, according to Midtown Patch who spoke with Rafshoon Thursday. He reportedly filed for bankruptcy.

“We’ve been trying for months,” Rafshoon told Midtown Patch. “The hole is just way too big.”

At this time, nothing has been confirmed to be replacing the bookstore and coffeehouse.

  1. What is the deal with all of these greedy landlords in Atlanta? I hope the place stays empty for months and the landlord loses tons on this space. Apparently they are now asking $7,696 per month for the space, which actually seems outrageous.

  2. At least now there wont be any old gay creepers hanging out looking for twinks to take them home. place was a disaster.. hope they open a Presbyterian church there instead. get them queens out hunty.

  3. WE THE CONSERVATIVE. Also need Blakes and other sinful places like that out of Atlanta. This isnt new york. if you want to be free and let your sins dominate your life try that in a different city. Slowly we are getting rid of the homosexuals in atl. Thats for the best. Soon you all wont have a place to go. Makes me happy. God Bless.

  4. STRAIGHT MEN’S VOICE, care to present yourself in person to discuss to your idiotic remarks?? You are about as stupid as they come! If anything the gay population in ATL is growing!

  5. Braves rosck69? 69? dirty filthy gay. Well gay population might be growing, which i find it hard to believe… but if it is… Where are you people gona go party? A hole in the wall bar called blakes? Leslies already lost their belissima bar.. gays lost their wetbar long time ago… now its Outwrite YES! This is a message from above. Believe me. your sins on earth arent worth it. try to save yourself and eternity shall be given to you. otherwise you will burn. But if you still wana talk in person pick a place and send me your contact info and ill be there. I can help you save yourself. GOD IS LOVE.

  6. For your info, I dont need your assistance with God. I attend church each Sunday and have all my life.

YOU, my friend, the one that practices HATE along with your leader Fred Phelps, needs saved from your sins. We will wait and see on judgement day who goes where. I know that you and your buddy Fred will be on the same boat.

Oh, also 69 stands for 1969, thank you.

  7. whos fred phelps? as long as i know phelps won the Olympics …
anwayyys shut up. youre a puppy. obey your master. sit!

  8. Dear Explain yourself….Your grammer and spelling is atrocious! Maybe you should pay more attention to your grade school teachers and less time trying to act like a grown up hater.Thankyou for my morning giggle reading your statement….it will keep me smiling untill “Happy Hour” at Blakes later this afternoon.

  9. hi all, we agonized over whether or not to publish “explain yourself’s” comments. we decided to publish them to demonstrate that, unfortunately, hatred still exists in our city.

  10. $7,696 a month? Is this true? That’s ridiculous! It makes me also hope the space sits vacant for a while and hopefully the landowner and file for bankruptcy too… but for my neighborhood’s sake, I hope something useful fills the space.

As for the hater’s comments being published… its kinda like CNN when they invite the nutjobs to comment on news stories – they say its to provide a “balance” – but really it just give these people the impression that their point of view is accepted in society, when its not. We do not need to be reminded that hate exists in Atlanta – or that not all whites and blacks, gays and straights love each other… isnt this obvious?
