The “brewpub” this week put signage up at the Midtown space announcing “something’s brewing.”

Christopher Bivins, formerly the head brewer at White Street Brewing Co. in North Carolina, is one of Torched’s co-owners.

“We are very excited about becoming a part of the Atlanta craft beer and food scene,” Bevins told What Now Atlanta (WNA) in an email Wednesday.

Here’s a description of the brewpub from the about section on Torched’s newly-created Facebook page:

Torched Hop Brewing Company is a dynamic and upbeat brewpub aimed at providing Atlanta with the freshest hand crafted beer and cuisine in town. Our fun and inviting atmosphere will be a community-gathering place for people to enjoy great conversation over bold flavored beers and savory menu items. We place an important focus on creativity, having fun, and the freedom to express ourselves through our products.

Torched should open in December but “that will greatly depend upon the permitting process and buildout time,” according to Bevins.

  1. …six months tops. That space is doomed. Parking on Ponce sucks & there are no good alternate options. Other places that try to have valet parking in that area just come off as a joke. I don’t know what needs to go there, but food & beverage isn’t it.

I always scratch my head when I see people open restaurants in spaces that have repeatedly failed. The question is: Are they planning to offer something that isn’t already offered elsewhere? Are they offering something that is significantly better than other restaurants? Do they have six months worth of operating expenses on-hand so they can ensure that they continue to offer a good experience while business is (hopefully) growing? If the answer to ANY of those questions is no, then it will be a short experiment.

The restaurant business is hard. Very hard. But the decision of whether or not to open in such a crappy location is easy. Or at least it should be.

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the Old Spaghetti Factory there for 25 years? Let’s give them a fighting chance, and maybe the area will continue to turn around.

  3. My wife and I used to eat at OSF, and we simply stopped going as we were uncomfortable with the “valet” parking being offered.

I would love the location to work out for these guys (this can be a hit with college students), but the parking situation needs to be settled.

  4. I used to live a block from there when OSF was open. First off that place wasn’t that great and closed for a reason. Also that part of midtown was vastly more seedy and underdeveloped that it is now. It is much more walkable/bikeable now and has higher densities of residents and more is within walking distance. If they were smart they would market themselves as a pre/post Fox food/drink option for those who aren’t looking for “fancy”.

Will it work? Not sure but a brewery with TVs has a better chance than a straight up restaurant IMHO.

  5. The area has improved a lot. Hopefully they will see an equal amount of pedestrian and car traffic. This sounds like an authentic operation being launched by two brothers with a lot of passion. The city needs more things EXACTLY like this. I hope the local community get behind and get something original off the ground.

  6. This area is only walkable during the day unless you feel like getting mugged. There have been numerous stories about crime in this area the neighborhood is attributing to Club Boogalou next door. And with that club making parking already non-existent, there certainly won’t be any more for this new place.

    1. I beg to differ my husband and I live in the area and are always looking to find a new place in walking distance.

  7. There used to be plenty of parking in the parking garage of the apartments next door (across Penn). They actually had signs inside that reserved parking. I don’t think many people knew it though. Maybe the brewery will workout something with the apartments -at least for valet.
