The porte cochere being demoed at Lenox is the “drive-under canopy at the main entrance of the property (shown right), a company spokesperson told What Now Atlanta in an email Monday. It is used for the mall’s valet service.

The Buckhead mall, at 3393 Peachtree Road, would not disclose project specifics at this time. It did, however, release this statement:

We are taking the first steps in our long term plan to redesign the front entrance of the shopping center. We will be creating more street level retail exposure, while enhancing the exterior look and customer experience of the center. We anticipate construction will start in spring of 2012, with retailer announcements occurring shortly after. Lenox Square’s long-standing tradition of evolving to attract the best retailers and to bring new experiences to its customers has kept it the shopping destination of the Southeast.

Demoing Lenox Square Mall’s porte cochere will cost an estimated $633,000.00.

What do you think the mall will do to “create more street level exposure?” Use the space for new retailers? Add more parking? Share your thoughts in the comment section!

  1. They need to upgrade the 3rd world country food court. I was there yesterday and It felt like i was at Plaza Fiesta on Buford Hwy the moment we made it to the lower level.

  2. by street-level retail do they mean parking lot level retail? I doubt they would be extending to peachtree, right? Cant wait to see some renderings, regardless

  3. I went to Lenox two weeks ago, and was reminded why it had it had been a year since my last visit.

    That place is insufferable.

  4. More than 1 out of 7 Georgians receive Food Stamps. The Georgia poverty rate exceeds 14% and the unemployment rate exceeds 10%. Yet there is $600,000 available to tear down a mall facade and replace it? What a f*ing waste! We need to get our priorities straight and stop this type of stupidity.

  5. It’s not Simon Property Group’s problem that 1 in 7 Georgians receive food stamps, nor is it their fault that 1 in 7 Georgians who can’t afford to shop in Lenox Square do so anyway. With all that money the mall is bringing in, I am glad they are reinvesting it into the “community” by slowing chipping away at the dis-interaction the mall currently has with the area.

Hopefully they will bring retail up to the street – somehow (though that will divide the parking), and maybe they will decide to warm up to the newly redone Shops Around Lenox, whose owners Healey Weatherholtz Properties have done a tremendous job turning around a decrepit eyesore into premiere, practically “high street” retail (albeit in a strip center on a side street).

I am sure SPG is working with Buckhead Coalition and other nearby property owners to configure a way to integrate the mall into a new and transforming Buckhead.

  6. @Sarah Palin’s… – Based on your name, it’s hard to tell if you’re joking or not, but I don’t see what one thing has to do with the other? Simon is spending $600,000. Short of donating it to those people on food stamps, what could Simon do that you would deem appropriate? They’re spending money which will result in creating jobs, thus lowering unemployment. Hopefully some of those people on food stamps will get those jobs and maybe not need to food stamps. Your ignorance is shocking and disappointing.

  7. @ Palin – Does the owner of Lenox Mall have any responsibility for those receiving food stamps? Nope. Will this demo, which will add more retail, increase the number of jobs available in Atlanta? Yep (an increase is an increase, regardless of how marginal it is). Are you buying Christmas gifts for your friends/family this year? What a f*ing waste! You need to get your priorities straight and stop this type of stupidity.

@ AJ – she just wants a handout.

But regarding Lenox, in general – It’s disgusting, much like most, if not all, shopping malls.

  8. Urbanist – No, I am not buying xmas gifts for friends or family. They have all of the crap that they need. They will simply have to live without another waffle iron or DVD player.

The owner of Lenox Mall, by virtue of all of the advantages that he enjoys from the wealth that he has accumulated, does indeed have a responsibility to society at large. That is how it works in every developed country. Put down your copy of “Atlas Shrugged” and take a f*ing whiff of reality.

  9. Sarah, how many meals could be bought for the price of your computer and/or smartphone? How many per month for the cost of your internet service. Unless your name is Mother Theresa, I’m not buying that you don’t have anything in your life that you could cut out in order to pay for meals for the homeless. Sure, it won’t be as much as the renovations of Lenox Mall would bring but for those eating the meal, that wouldn’t matter.

So come on, tell us how you have no material possesions and use every cent you make to feed the homeless (excluding a few dollars for you to buy rice for yourself).

Urbanist, construction will add jobs but I’m not sure that the new shops will do anything other than displace demand from somewhere else. The US is by far the most over retailed nation on earth (hmmm, ok, you might find some tiny nation state somewhere that is an outlier). I’d love for Lenox to build two new wings that front Lenox Road and Peachtree but it’s hard to believe we really need more retail in this country. Perhaps if it displaced some of the retail at one of the Avenues of BFE’ strip malls, something good would come from it.

  10. @ Palin –

“That is how it works in every developed country”

Sorry, but punishing private enterprise for improving itself for the sake of the “needy” isn’t how things work in developed countries. Nice try though.

  11. When was the porte cochere added? I wonder if they’ll attempt something like what was done at Perimeter and Cumberland, where pseudo-lifestyle centers were tacked on. It would seem odd for Lenox to be so late to the party…

  12. The porte cochere was added in the mid 90’s when the second level was added to the mall.

My guess is they want more window frontage and doors in the area that the porte cochere currently fills. I imagine they are working on a deal with a new tenant to take the soon to be vacated Crate and Barrel space and this is part of a sweetener of sorts.
