Unhappy with dining options Downtown, restauranteur plans new Hibachi-style fast casual restaurant.

Yumm Teriyaki, a Japanese restaurant serving Hibachi to-go, is opening Downtown.

Located at 87 Peachtree Street, the Hibachi restaurant will occupy a 3,300-square-foot corner space at the Kessler CityLofts Building, taking the place of the now shuttered Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, according to a permit filed with City of Atlanta.

Xuejun Cai, owner of Yumm Teriyaki, told What Now Atlanta in a telephone interview Thursday that it’s next to impossible to find “quality food” Downtown.

“I’ve spent the past few years working Downtown,” Cai said. “It’s very hard to find good food. My goal is to bring quality food downtown.”

Like a traditional Hibachi grill, Yumm will serve chicken, steak, fish and shrimp entrees but made made fresh on the spot, to-go.

“Other food Downtown is not really fresh,” Cai said. “Our concept is fresh to order.” Yumm Teriyaki will open late next week (either Thursday or Friday), according to Cai.

  1. This area seems to be on the up-swing as far as restaurants. Just a 1/2 block away is a great new Korean restaurant (Blossom Tree).

  2. There’s already a restaurant downtown that offers quality teriyaki along with many other Japanese items. Think Sushi located on Broad St. welcomes Yumm and wishes them the best of luck.

  3. This sounds really good. I work at one of the federal buildings really close by, so I’ll definitely try it this week or next. With the exception of Lunacy Black Market, there’s almost no freshly-made, quick food to be had at this end of downtown at lunchtime.

Blossom tree is a bit more than half a block away, though. It’s way up across the street from Woodruff Park, more like half a mile away.
