Kirkwood coffee house goes vegan

Dulce Vegan Bakery and Café is opening in the former Gathering Grounds Coffee House in Kirkwood.

Serving baked goods from a “commercial kitchen for four years,” Dulce co-owner Howell Belser said her and business partner Idalys Sansores, are estatic to join the Kirkwood community with their first retail location.

Dulce Vegan Bakery and Café was slated to open in Grant Park at 575 Boulevard, but “the landlord couldn’t get us the necessary permit to open there,” according to Belser.

The bakery will take the shuttered Kirkwood coffee house at 1994 Hosea L. Williams drive opening by the end of the month, “tentatively the third week in March,” Belser told What Now Atlanta.

The bakery and café will offer french press coffee, teas, and espresso as well as seasonally rotating soups, salads and sandwiches, all vegan of course.

Dulce hopes to grow their own herbs and will also serve “gluten free, raw food, low in sugar, and sugar-free options.”

What Now Atlanta spoke with Josh Kahn, owner of Aces Bar and Grille next door who wanted to know, “how do you cook baked goods without eggs and butter?”

“There are substitutions for just about everything these days,” said Belser.

And for those that the businesses name might deter, Belser said don’t worry, “the food doesn’t taste vegan.”

  1. I agree with adriennefriend. Vegan food, prepared by someone who can cook, does taste amazing! Some people don’t understand that vegan food is FOOD. It’s not some kind of alien food, and you don’t have to label yourself or change your life to enjoy a vegan meal. Dulce will be a sane and healthy oasis in a wasteland of burger joints and yogurt shops.

  2. Um, seriously, what’s that “the food doesn’t taste vegan” all about? Vegan food, just like any food, prepared by someone who knows what the heck he’s doing in the kitchen is mouth-wateringly delicious. Josh Kahn’s statement “how do you bake without eggs and butter” makes me wonder about his own knowledge in the kitchen. Let me tell you – you can bake some freaking delicious goodies without eggs and butter.

  3. That’s actually the opposite of what I meant to say. Vegan food is awesome!! I meant that it’s good food that everyone can enjoy.

We are very excited to be in Kirkwood and hope everyone will come and visit us when we open!

  4. I’m really looking forward to this place. I am not a vegan, but I enjoy anything that tastes good.. especially baked goods! Yeah!

  5. I cannot wait for this to open. I am not vegan, but LOVE vegan food and the creativity involved. It’s about time we get something like this in Atlanta!

  6. I think she just meant it doesn’t taste like the stereotypical vegan baked goods. I’ve definitely met my share of omnivores that think all vegans eat is salad and muffins that taste like sawdust. Obviously, that’s not true, but I think that’s what she was addressing with that quote.

  7. This is SO exciting!!! Congratulations Howell and Idayls! This is going to be an amazing palce. Kate B.

  8. I’m grateful that you picked up on my inquiry about this location on Twitter and am sorry the person that responded didn’t properly credit this post (though I understand why), as I clearly missed it. I was excited about the possibility of what I thought would be the third vegan bakery slated for the City of Atlanta, but I’m more excited to learn that it’s Dulce Vegan that will finally be opening! No more treks to Sandy Springs to hope to find some of their items at World Peace Café. And, much closer to me than Grant Park. Good stuff, all of it. (Hey, maybe we will one day have three vegan bakeries in ATL, but for now I’ll settle for two great ones.)

  9. I am so excited for you two and cannot wait to visit you in Kirkwood…also looking forward to hosting the Women of UGA Lunch at your place!

    xo, beth

  10. Hey Josh you jackass, the food next door rocks, the service rocks, and they are open while you are not! HA!
