The historic painting commemorating the Battle of Atlanta will be housed in a new 23,000-square-foot building at the history center’s campus.

The new facility for the world’s largest oil painting will cost an estimated $32.2 million, financed privately at no cost to city taxpayers, according to the announcement.

“I can’t think of a better custodian for this historic work,” Reed said.

The building in Grant Park that is currently home to the Cyclorama will become event and restaurant space at Zoo Atlanta, also funded through private donations.
