National discount fashion retailer to replace Borders Books and Music.
Maxxinistas: start your engines! T.J. Maxx is coming to Midtown.
The discount fashion retailer is opening a 23,000-square-foot store inside the Midtown Place shopping center, at 650 Ponce de Leon Avenue, according to a permit filed with City of Atlanta Wednesday.
The store will occupy the site where Borders Books and Music had been located before its parent company filed for bankruptcy and it shuttered.
T.J. Maxx will spend at least $650,000 for a commercial renovation to the space, the permit notes.
The store sells discounted merchandise, including women’s clothes and shoes, accessories, men’s and children’s wear, bed and bath products and other household goods.
Carrie Garfield, media relations supervisor for The TJX Companies, Inc., told What Now Atlanta in an email, “I don’t have any additional information for you yet.”

This really sucks and makes me very sad.
very smart location. The lower income “urban” market is what the new trend for virtually all of Atlanta will be. Aldi comes to mind too as does BevMo etc. low income stuff will do well in midtown.
What’s so bad about TJ Maxx? It’s not as if it’s Rainbow or one of those $7 stores. I’ve known both attorneys and miniumum wage-earning students who shop there. When I was in grad school I found a $400 Tumi suitcase there for $150 and I bought it – by putting it on layaway for a month, even. And it’s much better than yet another empty storefront.
I mean, this is a strip mall we’re talking about here, ya’ll. Home Depot and a big-box office supply store aren’t exactly highbrow either. TJM isn’t exactly going to ruin the atmosphere over there.

It could be worse – it could be a gold store such as we’re getting on Piedmont next to Tierra. Yuck. Trashy!
We are being Marshalled and T.J. Maxxed to death!! Just missing some more nail salons, Fast/Cash Pawn shops, and boarded up convenience stores and we are all set to go.
I agree, Midtown is starting to look like Roswell or Alpharetta with these chain stores moving in. If we wanted bland chain big box stores replacing the mom and pops like Borders, we would have moved to the burbs! That was sarcasm! Really people, you can get some great buyer at TJ Maxx, some of the same stuff that is over priced at the malls. As for the poorly stated low income remarks above, most of the shopers for the TJ Maxx stores i general are actually suburban, I know, hard to believe. And believe it or not, Atlanta is “urban”.

The best thing about this news is that an already outrageously congested parking lot will get even more crowded and impossible to navigate. Yeah, great thinking, guys.
Hey JB I was being sarcastic…hence the phrase “That was sarcasm” inserted right after that comment about Borders.
