Improv comedy theatre thinks quick on its feet about new space as current location readies for re-development.
The Village Theatre is leaving its current Decatur Street location to open at the Pencil Factory Lofts. Village secured a lease early August for a 3,800-square-foot space at 349 Decatur Street, according to a release Monday.
The theatre will continue performances at its current location until the new space is complete in October 2011. Village is reportedly relocating because its current location is slated to be re-developed into a self-storage building.
Gene Kansas Commercial Real Estate represented the landlord in this transaction.
“We are thrilled that The Village Theatre is coming to Pencil Factory,” Kansas said in the release. “They have a great reputation and I know they’ll bring a good energy, along with a lot of laughs to the community.”
Village Theatre is currently located at 486 Decatur Street and has been Atlanta’s local source for improv comedy since 2008.
Blair Holden, co-owner of The Village Theatre, said in the release the theatre’s new location will offer more seating and classrooms.
Pencil Factory — a Perennial Properties development — is also home to Caramba Café (formerly of Morningside), Hill Street Tavern, The Beignet Connection and Intown Market to name a few. The development is comprised of 200 apartments and is conveniently located in close proximity to Grant Park, Inman Park, Reynoldstown and Downtown Atlanta.

Maybe some of the area homeless drug addicts can do some improve there?
Cool news. I’m really happy with the way this whole block with the Pencil Factory is turning out. My family took a MARTA trip to the King station yesterday to have lunch at the HIll Street Tavern here and I was struck by the way the whole building is shaping up. Very nice. With the addition of this theater it looks like the ground level spaces will be mostly full.
One complaint I’ve got about this area (well, my second complaint following the high prices of the Pencil Factory Lofts themselves): it needs a nice public park. There’s one just north of it that’s been fenced up and closed for a while. Hopefully it’ll get re-opened.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why the developers named this place “The Pencil Factory”. Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Atlanta history should know the emotional resonance and painful associations that name evokes. If you’re new to Atlanta or have been living under a rock, Google “Leo Frank” or “Mary Phagan”.
