Sam Flax art supply to relocate after 20 years

Brookwood Place Kroger to become art supply store’s new home.

Sam Flax, the art supply store on Northside Drive for two decades, is relocating for the second time in 25 years.

The art supply store was first located on Spring Street.

Sam Flax will take the 36,000-square-foot space currently occupied by Kroger at Brookwood Place, according to Lionel Flax, general manager for the Atlanta location — the art supply store has an Orlando location which also relocated recently.

Kroger is scheduled to close its Brookwood Place store July 8.

Flax told What Now Atlanta in an interview Thursday the current location on Northside Drive will remain in business until the Brookwood Place location opens early October.

“It is our intention to stay in full operation on Northside Drive with no more than three days of disruptive service,” Flax said.

With 11,000 square feet of additional space, the new location will offer a more “comprehensive range of art supplies” such as “things for architects, model making and ceramics,” according to Flax. Their new papery department will offer a few thousand varieties of paper from around the world, he said.

The new location will also offer more “formal” art classes and potentially a gallery space.

In reasoning for the relocation, Flax told What Now Atlanta the art supply store had planned on moving to a less “industrial space” for sometime.

“When the space became available, we new it was an exciting opportunity for us,” Flax said.

hmm, wonder how this will effect where GT architecture students shop… Though I’m sure SCAD Atlanta students will be very happy about the move :)

Bring it on! I love their book selection as well, and the thought of 1,000 different kinds of paper makes me drool. I’m not a dork…;)

love the idea of a potential gallery space! This can be a great asset to Atlanta and especially South Buckhead

Brookwood Place as a whole seems like a curse. There was an art store there at one point that failed, swoozies a stationary store failed, border’s failed. Now Kroger can’t even stay open? Guess we’ll see how Sam Flax fairs against the curse.

The art supplies store (i think it was just called “The Art Store”) that was there before seemed to be doing really well and then i think the whole company went under… it was a long time ago, so I can’t remember that well, but it was not around long. Borders as a company also closed a lot of stores at once. If I’m not mistaken, Swoozies closed dozens and dozens (if not all?) of their stores, too at the same time. So while these store may have very well been some of the least profitable, the curse seems to be on the companies, not just the space alone.
Personally, I am very confident about success for Sam Flax in this space. It has an already existing presence in this part of town and is even closer to SCAD, which surely cant hurt. Best of luck to them! Glad they decided to more to a less industrial space. I would love to see them make it more pedestrian friendly and opening up that peachtree entrance!

Sam Flax is by far the best art store in Atlanta….significantly cheaper, and with constantly better supply than Utrecht. If tech students are trying to save the money, they’ll make the trek a few miles further north for this.

[...] Well there’s no longer any excuse to not have supplies for class.  That’s right say bye bye to Kroger and hello Sam Flax.  This might cause problems with groceries or quick snack purchases between printing sessions but the benefits of being a stones throw away from supply store should out weigh the cons.  Plus with the two traffic lights at Brookwood Place you’ll actually be able to get in and out of the parking lot without risking your life. Unlike the gamble of turning left onto Northside at the current location. For more info check out this article on Whatnowatlanta.com [...]
