Former Sno-Flake Ice House to reopen as American eatery
Inman Park’s Sno-Flake Ice house has closed.
Chef Gerald Joseph is taking over the dessert shop at 240 N. Highland avenue to open Big Zhaddy’s Place in April.
Joseph, the “part owner, part executive chef and chief bottle washer,” is in the process of moving his family from Maryland to operate the Inman Park restaurant.
With a name like Big Zhaddy’s Place, the first thing What Now Atlanta wanted to know was its origination. The restaurant’s name has been ten years in the making, according to Joseph.
“I am a big guy,” Joseph explained in an interview Monday. “My oldest daughter who is now fourteen, used to call me ‘zhaddy’ because she couldn’t pronounce the ‘d’ in ‘daddy’ when she was three or four.”
In Maryland, Joseph and cousin Ginelle Brome, owned and operated Hidden Treasure Cafe, which “will be closing” after two years.
“I have been visiting Atlanta for the past fifteen years and worked here during the Olympics,” said Joseph. “There was never [an] opportunity to move to Atlanta until now.”
Zhaddy’s will serve a mixture of cuisines in a fast casual environment, according to Joseph, who listed menu items such as Cuban sandwiches and Tex-Mex options like fish tacos.
And they won’t be using “fryers or fatty ingredients,” according to Joseph. “We bake our french fries and we pan sear our meats.”
As for the interior, think “warm chocolates and burnt orange.”
Zhaddy’s hopes to open just before the Inman Park Festival, “tentatively April 15.”
The restaurant will serve Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Looking forward to a replacement for SnoFlake, which was an ill-fated concept from the get-go. These guys would be crazy not to be open by the time the Inman Park Festival comes around.
