A. Re-opened After Completing Renovations B. Changed Ownership C. Added To Atlanta’s Disintegration

WaterHaven Restaurant at Technology Square in Midtown has closed as of this past Sunday, July 4 adding to Atlanta’s disintegration (ouch).

Originally “closed for renovations”, WaterHaven’s closure continues what is becoming quite the trend in Atlanta restaurants: the owner’s closed their failing restaurants for “renovations” to get it together and ultimately fail to re-open as promised.

Student Body President at Georgia Institute of Technology, Corey T. Boone, reports there is light at the end of the tunnel even with the continued restaurant failure at Technology Square.

Said Boone when discussing the recent WaterHaven closure, “this is what happens when you put a restaurant on a college campus that doesn’t reflect the budget of a college student.”

The location isn’t the problem, according to Boone, who feels the campus could use a pub or tavern like Taco Mac in that space.

“We are currently getting more dining options at the student center commons,” Boone says. “These new options are student friendly which is something we have been fighting for.”

The addition of Taco Bell and Subway at the student center commons, a recently opened Waffle house and with Zaya Mediterranean opening at the student center food court, the options are starting to make sense.

A local thread about the recent closure reveals some thoughts from user Penny who says, “The closure probably has to do with what type of place they keep putting there. It might be nice to consider that the large amounts of people in the area are busy students who live on a budget, lots of which don’t even take showers on a regular basis.”

Penny’s thoughts on a replacement: “Putting a nice restaurant that isn’t even open on a Sunday is not realistic for that space. Should just put in a Chick-Fil-A.”

Penny, Chick-Fil-A is never open on Sunday either, FYI.

  1. Just because a restaurant is techically on the East Midtown section of the GT campus does not mean it should scale itself down to appeal to college students’ tastes and budgets. Midtown is a diverse community and the appeal of an urban campus is the ability to blend the college feel with the fabric of the city. This space, if marketed appropriately, could sustain a restaurant with a nice environment that appeals to all ages and income levels. Downtown Athens has several successful restaurants that exceed Taco Mac in atmosphere and creativity and appeal to both college students and non.

Taco Mac is not a good fit there anyway given that there is one at Metropolis.

  2. A burger place that is what they need there 🙂

The rent is probably sky high for that large space, but a place like a Highland Bakery, Ria’s or Sun in My Belly would probably do quite well in that location.

  3. Rumor has it that the folks who own Graveyard Tavern off Moreland have signed a lease to take over the space that currently houses St. Charles Deli, and that St. Charles Deli will relocate further west into the former Lexington Chocolate space. And although the two city blocks that comprise Tech Square share the name, the developers of the Waterhaven space are a separate entity from Georgia Tech.
